This Week’s Focus:

Jesus is King – Week 1

Colossians 1:9-23

Jesus is King over everything. Because he holds first place in creation and re-creation, he deserves first place in every part of our lives.

SUMMARY
1. Jesus is King over creation.
• Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. In him we see the full character, competence, and compassion of God.
• “Firstborn” speaks of rank, privilege, and supremacy – not that the eternal Son was created. He is before all things (see Psalm 89:27).
• Everything – seen and unseen – was created by him, through him, and for him. No earthly or spiritual power is beyond his authority.
• Jesus does not merely begin creation; he sustains it. “In him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17).
2. Jesus is King over re-creation.
• Sin leaves us unable to make ourselves right with a holy God through good intentions or good works.
• Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, God makes peace and reconciles us to himself. Faith in Jesus brings new, abundant, and eternal life.
3. Live a life worthy of the King.
• Paul calls himself a servant of this good news. His prayer in verses 9-14 shows what allegiance to Jesus looks like: knowing God’s will, living fruitfully, growing in faith, enduring with joy, and giving thanks.
• If Jesus is supreme, he is not one item in life’s “junk drawer.” He belongs at the center, ordering everything else.

REFLECT

1. What does Colossians 1:15-20 reveal about who Jesus is? Which description most strengthens your faith today?

2. Where are fear, pressure, or unseen circumstances tempting you to forget that Jesus is over all things?

3. Are you trying to settle your account with God through good works, or resting in the reconciliation Jesus provides?

4. What area of your life is most likely to be placed in a spiritual “junk drawer” rather than under Jesus’ rule?

5. If Jesus truly had first place this week, what would change in your priorities, relationships, decisions, or habits?

NEXT STEPS

• Read: Slowly read Colossians 1:9-23 each day. Circle every phrase describing Jesus.

• Reorder: Name one area where Jesus has not been first. Make one concrete change that brings it under his leadership.

• Release: Give one fear or circumstance to Jesus in prayer, trusting his authority over what is seen and unseen.

• Respond: Thank Jesus for reconciling you to God, then share that good news with one person this week.

• Pray: Use Colossians 1:9-14 to pray for yourself and someone else.

KING JESUS, TAKE FIRST PLACE IN MY HEART, MY HOME, MY DECISIONS, AND MY DAYS.
